New York’s annual Fashion Night Out did not occur this past year, due to the high cost of throwing the multitude of parties and events without generating as much income as expected. But fashion-forward boutique 3NY refused to let the party stop. At the store’s Broome Street location last Wednesday, September 11, owner Sam Dresner kept the annual tradition alive with a party thrown to showcase fun and flirty brand Yumi Kim’s new Fall line and the affordable, luxurious handbag brand Erin Dana’s new Spring line. The event was also thrown in honor of the store’s introduction of e-commerce online shopping, launched September 10th (shop here!).
Designers Kim Phan and Erin Dana Lichy, both warm, lovely, and stunning, moseyed throughout the store, speaking with attendees discussing their brands. Phan even hugged me as soon as she saw my beloved Yumi Kim printed blouse, before we even got a chance to speak. Down-to-earth, cool, and gifted designers? So much to love about these women! The party offered the opportunity to shop, mingle with the designers and other fashion-minded store fans, as well as offering raffle prizes, food, and cocktails.
Phan describes Yumi Kim’s Fall collection as inspired by the disco-era, with a more a mod twist in addition to her trademark pretty floral patterns. There are new geometric shapes featured in her trademark bold, bright colors. Silk is the trademark material in the Yumi Kim line, allowing the pieces to offer breezy comfort as well as style. Yumi Kim products involve an array of blousy tops, printed and solid pants, skirts, maxi and short dresses, and Phan’s favorite, the Emmie Jumper. There are also gorgeous hand-beaded tanks, skirts, and jackets. At 3NY, Phan looked perfect in the Emmie Jumper in the new graphic MOMA print (see photo above).
Phan is such a natural designer that, despite no formal training, she has built her own successful brand with devoted fans, myself included. I have been a Yumi Kim lover since discovering the Yumi Kim boutique five minutes from my apartment. The store features her beautiful clothes but also accessories and shoes from other brands and girlie knick knacks, like the notebook with a pretty cover that I purchased last year. A true animal lover, Phan named her company after her beloved pet Yorkie, Yumi. As stated on the Yumi Kim website, “The brand is inspired by Phan’s personal aesthetics, vintage accents and silhouettes, with a touch of funk and urban femininity. A lover of flowers, Phan incorporates floral patterns and color schemes in many of her designs.”
For Erin Dana Lichy, creating handbags that are luxurious and functional at a reasonable cost is top priority. Lichy reports that developing affordable luxury is the brand’s main concern, wanting to bring handcrafted, beautiful bags to the masses. Lichy works as the creative side of the brand while her husband Abe handles the business side. The brand’s new spring line was inspired by Colombian sunsets and incorporates pastel-infused colors like coral, teal, light blue, and yellow. The line contains Lichy’s favorites, line signature the Ellie half-moon shaped clutch and the sleek, easy-to-carry belt bag. Other collection items include the Max tote, with or without croc embellishment, and the Billie crossbody bag.
Phan has a personal connection to the store and supporting friend Dresner is something she feels passionately about. She used to live in very close proximity to the store and became friends with Dresner. Phan reported to me, “It’s a really cute story because I used to live on top of 3NY. So Sam and I were neighbors and I used to come down all the time and we became friends. I slowly started putting my clothes in the store and he’s been such a big supporter. It’s kinda cool, we always joke around about it, we call it Yumi3NY because he’s like, ‘Oh, we have so much Yumi Kim in here.’ It’s cool because I get to hear first-hand on a day to day basis. I’ve probably seen more of Sam’s store than I’ve see my own store. I would come home everyday and he’d be like. ‘Oh my God, that jumper you made sold so well, people love it,’ or ‘this print is getting a great reaction.’ It’s getting first-hand information on a day-to-day basis and I love it because, waking up, walking my dog in the morning, I’d see my stuff in the window and it’s cute. He’s been an amazing supporter and it’s also really cool to help support your friends. You see your friends doing their thing and your like, ‘you know what? I gotta be a part of that.'”
Erin Dana and 3NY’s relationship is a bit newer. Lichy stated, “We actually just started selling our bags here about a couple months ago. Our fall collection is a capsule collection, its not a full line, so really it was like our beta. We were making it to see what the market was like, to see who wanted our products, to see where we fit in, and then when we created our spring line, we took all of the knowledge we got from fall, and really kinda of blasted it out.”
These items are from the Fall Capsule collection. Stayed tuned to the site for the spring line!
