Truthfully, I’m not a fan of the Grammy’s, or at least the awards part. I think music is so broad and varied that to compare and contrast and have a “winner” goes against what music is all about. It’s like comparing apples and oranges, even within the same category. For example, a best rock album? There are at least 15 different kinds of rock music. But I do love a good red carpet, along with the show’s live performances. Let’s check out the 56th Annual Grammy’s and what the stars wore on their way into and while in L.A.’s Staples Center.
Taylor looks beautiful in sparkling Gucci Premiere. She nails red carpets 99% of the time. I love the netting around the neck and the dress’s little short sleeves. The fun, bouncy high ponytail and smoky metallic eye makeup complete the look nicely.
Va-va-voom! Miranda looks smokin’ in this red Pamella Roland gown. It shows off her recent weight loss and works perfectly with her tanned skin, old Hollywood glamorous waves, and gorgeous earrings. Lambert was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song for “Mama’s Broken Heart.”
Ryan Lewis & Macklemore
This duo dominated the Grammys both with wins and with style. Nominated for seven awards, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home four, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Thrift Shop” and Best Rap Album (The Heist). The guys look amazing in their blue toned mismatching suits. The outfits are completely different but look awesome side by side. Even their tuxedo slipper-style shoes go well together. Ryan’s sharp houndstooth suit is by Mr. Turk. I couldn’t find who made Macklemore’s velvet suit but I love it.
Macklemore also looked great performing in a tight black suit and cool bolero tie and the marriages of the 33 diverse couples during the “Same Love” performance was amazing and very powerful. Personally, it’s my least favorite of their three singles but the church-like background, the inclusion of the fantastic Queen Latifah as the marriage officiant, the sweet voice of Mary Lambert, and the mashup with Madonna of “Open Your Heart” all made for one stellar performance.
She looks like a bombshell in this amazing gold sequined Johanna Johnson. But she’s a supermodel so no one is surprised. She also has great taste on the red carpet. The slit/open mermaid cut at the bottom – beautiful. I also like her messy curls, long bob hair length, and smoky makeup.
Perfection in a Gucci tuxedo.
Madonna and David
Madonna looks dapper and elegant in her Ralph Lauren Collection suit. I like that this is a new look for her and is age appropriate and fits her role as one of the Queens of the business. It’s her Pimp look, complete with a cane. Her son David looks great too. She continued this style in the “Same Love”/”Open Your Heart” performance, wearing what is basically this outfit but in a sharp, crisp white and trading in this hat for a cowboy one. The white look also fit the marriage theme wonderfully. She even rocked a white cane on the stage too.
Beyonce and Jay-Z
This is the couple of the night for sure, the King and Queen of this year’s Grammy’s. Beyonce absolutely killed the show’s opening in her incredibly sexy La Perla bodysuit and polka dot pantyhoes and Hova looked handsome in his impeccably cut tuxedo with cool dotted jacket. After their hot as hell performance, the couple looked spectacular, with Queen Bey changing into a gorgeous Michael Costello gown.
The Project Runway alumni designer told Booth Moore of the L.A. Times, “The dress is entirely handmade. I wanted to make it something that would stand out, and be extra special. So I added this nude mesh overlay to the fabric to give it the illusion of skin. I like that it has the feeling of flowers and leaves falling from a winter wonderland onto the nude-illusion fabric. We made it in about a day. And the hemline is horsehair wire.” Impressive stuff! Congrats to Jay-Z on his win for Rap/Sung Collaboration: “Holy Grail,” with Justin Timberlake, by far one of my (and everyone’s) favorite songs of the last year.
They were so cute walking off the stage with their arms around each other!
Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose
I don’t typically think of these two as looking great on the red carpet but I must give credit where credit is due. Rose looks more elegant than usual in this beautiful Naeem Khan gown but still gets to show off her trademark bouncy girls as well. Khalifa looks beyond cool in this tuxedo with leather collar and tie. I also love that he personalizes the look with boot/sneaker hybrids that casual it down a tad.
This is hands down the best Kendrick has ever looked. The presenter wore this stunning Azzaro gown that is also beyond sexy due to the low V-shaped chest cut out. Her shoes and earrings are both beautiful, fierce/strong accessories, and her Glamazon wavy hair and winged-eye makeup complete the look ideally.
The Daft Punk men looked incredible last night. The tuxedos matched with the futuristic, robotic helmets and hands/gloves. And those matching sparkly boots? Sick! I love this look!! This duo really owned the night. Their album Random Access Memories won three honors, for Album of the Year, Best Dance/Electronica Album and Engineered Album, and “Get Lucky,” their single with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, was named Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Pink, nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Just Give Me a Reason,” featuring Nate Ruess, had another stellar aerialist performance during the show and many think she also nailed the carpet in this Johanna Johnson dress. However, I think that with her superfit, gymnast body that this dress does her no favors. No offense to Pink, because I like her a lot, but she kind of looks like a dude in a dress here. Her stylist should have helped her find a dress that flatters her in the right places but maybe tones down her jacked arms. Maybe something with a nice cap sleeve? It’s a very pretty gown, just not right for her. And also, it’s a little more Golden Globes or Oscars than the Grammy’s. She could have had a little more fun.
The talented Ms. Key’s look had all the makings of a knockout winner. But for me, something is off about this Armani Prive dress. Maybe its a case of the Pink’s, like it doesn’t really suit her more boxy-shaped body. Or maybe it just makes her body look that way. I don’t know, I can’t really tell. Maybe in person she looked dynamite? But in all the pictures, it fell flat for me.
This Grammy darling picked out a beautiful Armani Prive gown, that looked fantastic on the runway but not so fantastic here. The winner for Best Country Album and Best Country song (“Merry Go ‘Round”) looked better in her performance dress. It showed off more her nice body and her hair down seems to suit her better and make her look more vibrant and youthful. And awesome glow-in-the-dark cowboy boots!
This presenter’s outfit does nothing for anyone. The Fitriani dress is nice enough but boring shape and a blah color. She could have at least made the outfit a bit more fun with fabulous hair and makeup. But instead? Dullsville!
The starlet wore Dolce & Gabbana. Pretty gown but we’ve seen her in this exact same look a million times already. So uninteresting and monotonous. Even her hair is exactly the same every time. It’s also way too safe a dress for the Grammy’s. Live a little! You’re young and flat-chested, you can get away with so much more right now!
Robin Thicke and Paula Patton
The three-time nominee looked sexy in his velvet Giorgio Armani tuxedo and aviators. But another awards show miss for his wife, the beautiful Paula Patton, who is desperately in need of either a) a stylist or b) a better one. I couldn’t find out who made this zebra mess but do we really want to know?
I understand the “cutesie” side of this Valentino music-note gown but Katy’s past the cutesie stage (exhibit A: her weirdo witch performance) and there’s just too much going on all around. Not stylish or fashion forward.
Yikes! I’m not digging at all this Christian Siriano, made worse with that horrible hair cut. It’s way too long and dowdy.
We get it. You’re country and you don’t wear anything but jeans. Not even at your wedding. But I think it’s lame already. Wear a pair of khakis for once in your life. Look how incredibly beautiful and elegant and dressed up your wife is? Shame.
She’s looking pretty goth in this getup. But she’s a moody 16 year-old so what can you expect? But cheer up, you won Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Royals” (great song!). I think she’s been watching too much American Horror Story: Coven alongside Katy Perry.
I’m not sure at all what inspired this Emanuel Ungaro dress. A cool silky button up blouse was made hideous with those things down the sleeve and the skirt is pretty, just not all connected. I would wear the skirt somewhere else, or the shirt with nice pants (minus the sleeve armor), but not on the red carpet and by no means together. I do love her Christian Louboutin heels though. They’re classic but you barely notice them.
The Best Album of the Year nominee wore a sleeveless, Blumarine cream-colored gown with floral white appliqués from their spring 2014 collection. She paired it with a coral-colored clutch and red peep-toe stilettos. But all together it just looked kinda crazy to me. Especially with the braided hair, which Bareilles claimed was Katniss Everdeen inspired. Hmmm. Interesting. And by interesting I mean weird.
Best Dressed Female
Its a tie for me between Anna Kendrick and Miranda Lambert!
Best Dressed Male
I’m going with Daft Punk‘s super cool, futuristic, Robocop look! They looked sharp as hell and had the night of their careers/lives.
Best Dressed Couple
Without a doubt, Jayonce!
I have to go with Sara Bareilles. This was a big year for her and she should have stepped up to the plate fashion-wise.
