The stars aligned at last night’s celeb-studded 66th Annual Primetime Emmy’s, particularly if you are a fan of the night’s big winners Breaking Bad and Modern Family. The two shows dominated in the drama and comedy awards, respectively. The awards show, hosted by Late Night’s Seth Meyers, was heavy on the comedy and the gorgeous gowns.

The Red Carpet shined as television’s leading ladies and gents came out dressed to the nines. The colors that trended heavily on dresses were white, silver, and shades of reds and pinks, with lots of prominent beading and metallic details. Despite the fact that the cameras were intent to show all shades of spray tan, most celebrities in attendance looked fantastic, and chose polished, perfectly fitted gowns paired with great styling choices in hair and makeup.

Here are the women who wowed us the most during Sunday’s entertaining event. I also include which made my work article “The Five Best Dressed at Last Night’s Emmys.”

White Wonders

Last night, it was as much a white carpet as a red one. White was done right many times over, with many stars choosing fresh white dresses for the hot L.A. summer, and they could not have looked more chic doing so.

Sofia Vergara

The Modern Family multi-year nominee for Supporting Actress always does awards show right. With her exceptional good looks and body that is arguably the best in the world, it is hard for her to look anything less than outstanding. But she also chooses beautiful gowns. Last night’s white-hot, body-hugging Roberto Cavalli gown with metallic silver detail was shown off in an amazing way when Sofia was spun around on a revolving piece (like a chick at a car show) during a speech by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences chief Bruce Rosenblum. It was one of the funniest bits of the night thanks to her comedic skills. Best look of the night, Top 5!!!

Lucy Liu

Elementary‘s leading actress had my undivided attention in this gorgeous off-white Zac Posen. I couldn’t help picturing it as a contender for my wedding dress while she presented. She looked radiant.

Taylor Schilling

Even though this color washed the Orange is the New Black lead actress nominee out a bit with her skin tone, she still looked beautiful. “It’s a non-color,” she explained of the Zuhair Murad Couture beaded gown’s nude hue. I like the view from behind even better, with a simple but elegant halter back on the deco-inspired gown.

Camila Alves

The Brazilian beauty and longtime love of one of the night’s big stars, Matthew McConaughey, dazzled in a white gown from Zuhair Murad’s Resort 2015 Ready-to-Wear Collection. The dress featured a mosaic pattern and bateau neckline, with all-over sheer detailing and a skinny white belt. This is an incredible look.

 Kristen Wiig

Wow! The actress/comedian looks incredible here in this white Vera Wang gown. It fits her fabulous body to a tee and the blonde, short hair styled chic but messy could not be more amazing. I want that hair! Great smokey eyes too.

Michelle Monaghan

The female lead of this past season’s True Detective looked modern and elegant in this long-sleeved, high-slitted Giambattista Valli Couture dress, which she paired with pretty Christian Louboutin heels. Her lighter hair looks great on her also.

Red Hot Ladies

Next to white, another color of the night was red. These women did the striking, attention-seeking hue proud.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

The Veep star and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series winner (who also won the last two years) was a total knockout in a stunning custom gown by her go-to designer, Carolina Herrera. The raspberry draped dress featured a twisted and draped halter neckline, a cinched waist with contrasting skinny belt, and an open back with criss-cross leather straps. The leather details added a modern, high-fashion touch to the 53-year old’s look. The star’s straight hairstyle also looked sexy and sophisticated and different for her. Top 5 pick!

January Jones

The Mad Men actress, 36, absolutely stunned in a gorgeous high-low Prabal Gurung red gown. The voluminous red gown stopped just above the ankles, giving a perfect view of her sexy black strappy heels that matched the black accents on the bodice. Her red lips and black eyeliner makeup and pretty pulled-back hair went with the outfit perfectly as well. Top 5 pick!

Udo Azuba

The winner for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series (at this year’s Creative Arts Emmys) set off gasps when she walked on to the stage to present in this red gown by Christian Siriano. The ruffled, cascading train is stunning, and very feminine, which was a look that was fun for the fans to see on the OITNB star. The actress completed her outfit with a brilliant braided bun and neutral makeup. Just look at her amazing body – she is buff!

50 Shades of Grey

Metallics, greys, and dark navy blues made the women wearing these tones looks completely smoldering.

Debra Messing

The television’s longtime leading lady looked beautiful Sunday in a navy Angel Sanchez gown which featured criss-crossing sheer accents throughout the floor-length gown. The 46-year-old actress attended the awards show to promote her new NBC show The Mysteries of Laura and to present an award alongside nominee and winner Jim Parsons. Messing’s always-pretty red hair also looked fabulous in elegant sideswept waves. Another Top 5 pick!

Amy Poehler

The Parks and Recreation nominee looked super sexy in her Theia dress and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. The 42-year old comedy star continues her streak of looking glam and confident at events.

Julia Roberts

The ultimate Pretty Woman was part of this year’s Emmys because of her nominated supporting role in HBO’s The Normal Heart. Part of the night’s running joke was how many movie stars are taking over television, and Ms. Roberts, 46, was definitely pinpointed in a joke as being too big for TV. Despite not winning her category, she was definitely a red carpet winner in her dark blue, long-sleeved number by Elie Saab Haute Couture. The interesting, oversized beads added fun detail and whimsy to the short dress. She also looked beautifully blonde. Final Top 5 choice!

Gwen Stefani

Even though no one I was with even recognized her at first when she came onstage, once I realized I was staring at Gwen Stefani, I realized how much I loved her two piece glittery number. The shirt and skirt combo by Swarovski Versace featured a plunging neckline with metal panels across the chest. Maybe it needed a bit of hemming though. Gwen wore her bright blonde hair poker straight and parted in the centre for a change, and also chose pink lips (a nice change from her usual fire engine red!).  She was present to promote her new role as judge on the next season of The Voice.

 Melissa Rauch

The Big Bang Theory babe outshines her $1 million an episode costar Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting with this gorgeous brilliant blue Pamella Roland dress. I love the black beaded waist and gorgeous hair, makeup and earrings. She’s never looked better.

A little less boob would have gone a long way

Sarah Silverman

The winner for Outstanding Variety Special looked so pretty! And I love that she was open about bringing her weed pen along. And even though this is one of my favorite necklines in general, a less cleavage would have made the whole look more refined and made her look even sexier (see Kristen Wiig above, who did the neckline perfectly).

Viola Davis

Yes, the 49-year-old star of the new ABC series How to Get Away with Murder looked incredible in her Escada dress. Her body is rockin’. But she needed to put the ladies away a little more. They were popping out more than it even looks in this picture and they distracted from her presentation and the overall elegance of her choices.

Laverne Cox

I love, love the OITNB actress. Who doesn’t? But I didn’t drink the Kool-Aid with this Marc Bouwer dress, unlike most fashion reviewers.  She is so fashion-forward and dresses so cool usually, I thought this dress was kind of weird and I do not like the flower details. But either way, Cox had major cleavage, a bit too major for this awards show.

Better luck next time

The following choices were just bad, bad in every way, and the worst of the red carpet by a landslide.

Lena Dunham

The Girls star/writer/everything just had it all wrong. She wore a Giambattista Valli number that featured a loose-fitting light pink collared top and a layered pink gradient skirt. But it was ill-fitting and sloppy-looking as a whole. Her platinum blonde hair could have potentially worked if it wasn’t styled into this awful bowl cut. Her makeup looks pretty but who’s looking at her face?

Sarah Paulson

This was disappointing. I am a huge fan of American Horror Story and Paulson’s is always one of the best performances each season. She normally dresses sleek and stylish but this look is nuts! Her Armani Privé dress was less a gown than a smudgy gathering of black netting, with red dots appearing to float across its voluminous froths. But Vanity Fair completely disagrees.

Amanda Peet

Remember when Peet was a cool, hot actress? Now she’s the wife of David Benioff, the Games of Thrones co-creator and show runner. And she almost always dresses cuckoo now as his date for awards shoes. She is pregnant but her Giambattista Valli frock looks like someone raided either Grandma’s closet or an over-grown child’s.
