This year marks the 10th anniversary of Esquire Magazine‘s Sexiest Woman Alive issue and this year, the honor has been given to smoldering screen siren Penélope Cruz.
The article’s writer Chris Jones describes Cruz as having “no physical flaws…Her face contains no secrets, at least not about her. But her face tells you and the room plenty about you. If you want to feel like the world’s most judged man, sit down at a table in a restaurant with the Sexiest Woman Alive.”
This title is a far cry from another the Vicky Cristina Barcelona actress has been called before – “drama queen.” The Madrid-born actress, 40, explains in the mag’s November issue, “I’ve played a lot of tricks on myself. I’ve made it hard for me sometimes, especially in my teens and 20s. I had an attraction to drama. Most of us have that, especially if you are an artist—you feel like you are tempted to explore the darkness.”
Cruz wears a plunging black one-piece swimsuit on the cover and an assortment of high-slit one-piece suits and leg-focused lingerie on the inside pages. Perhaps a reason for the belly coverage? The actress is a mother to two children, son Leo, 3, and daughter Luna, 1, with actor husband Javier Bardem, 45. The couple were married in July 2010.
Cruz follows in the footsteps of the following actresses who have been named Esquire’s most desirable: Angelina Jolie (2004), Jessica Biel (2005), Scarlett Johansson (2007 and 2013), Charlize Theron (2007), Halle Berry (2008), Kate Beckinsale (2009),Minka Kelly (2010), Rihanna (2011) and Mila Kunis (2012).
In honor of the gorgeous Spaniard’s title, here are some of her most sultry red carpet looks from years gone by. Cruz has a tendency to choose dresses with lots of pizzazz, like feathers or tons of draping, which sometimes results in an overdone look. Therefore, the actress doesn’t always knock her styling out of the park. But when she does, she is beyond radiant and the most glamorous woman at the event.
2007 – Oscars
Cruz attended the 79th Academy Awards in this gorgeous blush pink Atelier Versace gown with an elaborately feathered train.
2007- The Spanish Institute’s Gold Medal Gala
The star chose this gorgeous white Oscar de la Renta dress with black embroidery. Her hair’s classic Hollywood waves are chic, timeless, and pure perfection, complimenting the dress to a tee.
2009- BAFTA Awards
A year after picking up a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress, Cruz wowed in this elegant black floor-length velvet gown by Azzedine Alaia. She channeled Audrey Hepburn with her gamine-style fringe and diamond jewels.
2009 Oscars Vanity Fair After-Party
The Balmain dress she chose to wear to the Oscars was too bridal-y but the wardrobe change did her wonders. For the after party, she chose this Grecian one-shouldered Atelier Versace dress with a high slit. The dress looked clean and crisp in this perfect white shade while also showing off her sultry side as she walked, with the slit showing off her toned legs.
2011 – Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Premiere
Cruz is a complete knock out in this glimmering long-sleeved Armani Privé gown at her movie’s premiere in Germany. This is Hot2Molly’s pick for the actress’s BEST RED CARPET LOOK EVER!
2012 – Oscars
The I’m So Excited! star wore princess-like blue-grey Giorgio Armani to the show’s 84th year, which she paired with twinkling diamonds and a classic, Old Hollywood-style hairdo. This is the runner-up for her best look of all time. She looks elegant and completely stunning.
2014 – Oscars
Cruz was draped in pale pink Giambattista Valli, which some reviewers said looked like bed sheets. But no one has ever looked better in bed sheets and she pulls off the dress beautifully. The draping is just perfect and the black accents/accessories, hairstyle, and bejeweled drop earrings are all flawless.
