Since the tragic sudden death of legendary comedian Joan Rivers, rumors have circulated that fellow funny lady Kathy Griffin would take over as lead host of E!’s Fashion Police. The show is one of the network’s most popular programs and had viewers in stitches thanks to Rivers’ hilarious one-liners. Joan and her humor mixed with great co-hosts (Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic, and fashion expert George Kotsiopoulos), wonderful celebrity guests, and fun, flavorful reviews of celebrity fashion made Police impossible not to love.
Griffin, 54, confirmed today that she was, indeed, offered a spot on the fashion talk show.
“”They did offer it to me. I don’t know if the situation is correct at this time for me or right for me at this time,” Griffin said. “I really hope they continue in the spirit of Joan’s work. She brought a fearlessness and a brand of humor into our homes that we really need.”
“It’s not about replacing Joan Rivers – no one can replace Joan Rivers. Ever,” she told People Magazine in September. “It’s more about the show just being a great show and a fun show.”
The network says it’s “still in talks with people and is making no announcements at this time.”
Former host Rivers died unexpectedly in September from low blood oxygen during a routine medical procedure on her vocal cords. At the New York City clinic, Rivers went into cardiac arrest and had to be rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was put on life support. She died several days later, dismaying fans worldwide. Rivers was 81.
E! announced in September that they would continue with the Fashion Police franchise, commencing again in January 2015 with Oscar coverage. Griffin previously denied reports that she was contacted by E! for the show despite being put on the shortlist of replacement nominees by media outlets.
After the beloved comedienne’s passing, Fashion Police aired a 90-minute tribute to Rivers in September, hosted by daughter Melissa Rivers, the show’s producer. The special looked back at the host’s best moments on the show. It was a wonderful tribute that appeased Rivers’ legion of fans, who she lovingly referred to as her “Joan Rangers.”
Personally, I was an enormous fan of Rivers and thought her jokes were outright hilarious. I never searched out Fashion Police but when I found it on television, I watched it and would laugh my ass off. It was such a tragedy for her daughter and grandson to lose their adored matriarch over night. I think Griffin would make a phenomenal replacement host, as her humor has many similarities to Joan’s – it is unfiltered, unabashed, confident, and hysterical. Here’s hoping Griffin agrees to the job!
