Hooray! My favorite awards show of the season was this Sunday and overall, the fashions were excellent. The color of the night was white, with lots of ladies choosing the pale shade. Let’s look at the style winners, losers, and the in-betweeners from the show (warning: the “winning” list is long!).
Jessica Chastain looked breathtaking in this Atelier Versace dress and Piaget jewelry. It’s such a cool color, she couldn’t help but stand out. Her side-swept hair and smoldering makeup finished the look perfectly. The A Most Violent Year star was one of my Best Dressed of the Night.
The redheads knocked ’em out of the park last night. Big Eyes lead actress winner Amy Adams looked perfect in this pale blue gown, also by Atelier Versace! Her pretty waves and Tiffany & Co jewelry completed the look.
Katherine Heigl, the State of Affairs star and presenter, looked as beautiful as ever in this navy blue Zac Posen gown and Neil Lane jewelry. The dress fit her to a tee and she had great hair and pretty soft makeup. I’m not a huge fan of hers but she looked incredible! One of my Best Dressed of the Night.
It honestly doesn’t matter what she wears, Amal Clooney will be the most spectacular woman in the room. But she did look exquisite in her Dior Haute Couture and Harry Winston jewelry. It was her white gloves, her own, that made her stand-out even more. How classic and sophisticated! The speech her husband made, when George received the Cecille B. Demille Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” made me cry! Lucky lady and lucky man!
I loved Sienna Miller‘s Winter White Miu Miu dress and short, messy bob. She is so cute! The beadwork was divine and the cut is provocative but still elegant because of her slim build. Her earrings were by Astley Clarke and other jewels by Tiffany & Co. She stars in both American Sniper and Foxcatcher. Another Best Dressed of the Night
Salma Hayek‘s Alexander McQueen white dress and belt are amazing. I just would have done without the flower. I don’t feel it goes with the modern texture of the dress (the flower is too romantic). But winning look! *Winter White
Girls and Peter Pan star Allison Williams dazzled in this fire engine red Angel Sanchez with H.Stern jewelry. Her smokey eye makeup and retro-inspired hair finished the look.
Diane Kruger sizzled in this gorgeous silver Emilia Wickstead gown. The fit was spectacular and the neckline unique. Kruger attended the event on the arm of her long-time boyfriend, The Affair star Joshua Jackson. His show won Best TV Drama and it was cute to watch Kruger congratulate and embrace her man. Another Best Dressed of the Night
I love Gina Rodriguez and CW’s Jane the Virgin. And I’m not alone, as Gina’s Best Lead Actress in a TV Comedy and the show’s Best Comedy nominations marked the first for the network! And the lovely lady won!! It was really exciting and her speech was one of the most heartfelt and emotional of the night. Everyone loves when an underdog wins. The star is so beautiful and her sleek, embellished black dress by Badgley Mischka and perfect hair looked phenomenal. I loved how her hair was longer and darker than on the show and how she is not too skinny, sending a great message to girls everywhere. The star wore Jimmy Choo heels.
It was Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s last year hosting but they did a great job (again) and looked great doing it. Their red carpet looks and hosting outfits were equally nice. Poehler’s necklace during the show was so cool and unique! For the red carpet, Fey wore Antonio Berardi and a super cute ponytail. Poehler wore cobalt Stella McCartney, her designer for every show she’s hosted. The long sleeves and pockets made for a cool, casual-meets-glam style. *Winter White
Emma Stone looked incredible in this Lanvin one-piece pantsuit. She ruled the red carpet as the only woman who braved to wear pants and her hair and cat-eye makeup looked perfect. I love her short Cabaret ‘do! Also, during interviews and when the hosts poked fun at her “big eyes” (like the movie), Emma was cool, mellow, sarcastic, and witty. Is anyone not a fan of this lovely lady?!
The Best Actress in a Drama nominee Reese Witherspoon looked gorgeous in her Calvin Klein Collection dress and Tiffany & Co jewelry. The Wild star’s side-swept hair finished off the glamorous look. Even though this is more silver, everyone is calling this dress another one of the Winter White looks. Best Dressed of the Night.
Lead Actress in a Comedy nominee Taylor Schilling looked awesome in this bright red Ralph Lauren Collection dress. This was definitely another color of the evening. The cool neckline and big ball gown skirt of the dress made it special. The Orange is the New Black star completed the look with a Salvatore Ferragamo bag, and Tiffany & Co, a slicked back updo, kickass dark eyebrows, red lips, and otherwise minimal makeup (cool beauty choices!).
Dakota Johnson sparkled in her Chanel Haute Couture dress and carried a Rauwolf bag. The slit in the middle of the dress made for a unique high-low effect. The star of the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey presented with her co-star Jamie Dornan.
Anna Kendrick‘s Monique Lhuillier gown is stunning and very pretty. The Into the Wild star chose a fresh face that makes her look very youthful. Love this look and her matching earrings.
Camila Alves looked pretty in this pale pink column Monique Lhuillier but Mrs. McConaughey has definitely looked better at past events. It’s not a show-stopper and that’s what I would think they always aim for when choosing looks. Pretty blah overall.
Chrissy Teigen looked radiant in this Zuhair Murad (one of my favorite gown designers) and Harry Kotlar jewelry. Mrs. John Legend’s high blonde ponytail was really cute too. But this look didn’t rise to the top of the group but fits easily in the middle.
Mrs. Channing Tatum (we hate you! jk) looked pretty in this Carolina Herrera dress and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. But Jenna Dewan Tatum could have picked something a little more exciting or sexy. This is nice but sort of blah. P.S. She has gotten so skinny, too skinny!
I love love Emily Blunt, who was excellent in Into the Woods, resulting in her nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Her Winter White, grecian-inspired Michael Kors gown and Lorraine Schwartz turquoise jewelry are amazing! But her heavy brown makeup and frizzy braided hair moved her to this middle category for me.
The BU grad (go Terriers!) and winner for Best Lead Actress in a Drama (for the Alzheimer’s movie Still Alice) is up there with Meryl Streep, meaning she can’t go wrong. It doesn’t matter what Julianne Moore looks like or wears on the red carpet anymore. But I put her in the middle because the fit of this Givenchy Haute Couture dress is perfect but a little too young for her and too much overall with the feathers.
Rosamund Pike is so gorgeous (love her chic bob!) and was great in Gone Girl, resulting in her Best Actress in a Drama nom. This Vera Wang Collection should work (it’s so pretty) but the fit looks weird. It should fit sleeker but doesn’t. *Winter White
I love funny lady Melissa McCarthy and when I saw the top half of the presenter’s menswear-inspired dress, I loved it. She looked chic and stylish in the collar-and-bow top and side bun. When I saw the bottom half, I wished it wasn’t tiered. Sleek and straight or even pants would have been better! But she sewed this dress together from looks in her closet, something she does often, which is really cool.
Kate Hudson is so pretty, with a slammin’ body. She always looks good and makes excellent fashion choices. I personally really like this Atelier Versace gown, worn with Forevermark jewelry. But it is a lot of skin, maybe too much. But her slim aka flat figure keeps it from being too booby, but it would have been better if the halter was cut less far apart on the chest. It was nice to see her with her hair pulled back for once, showing off her cute bigger ears. *Winter White
Jennifer Lopez is drop dead gorgeous. The presenter almost wore this Zuhair Murad gown to the American Music Awards but said she waited because it felt more “Golden Globes.” The draping cape part is so cool and different. But it would have been more elegant if it didn’t have both a super low-cut neckline (reminiscent of her infamous green Versace from 2000) AND a super high slit. One or the other to keep it classy, but JLo has never been concerned about that. And there is the shadow of nipple or tape or something on her left boob.
Claire Danes wore this interesting, multi-colored Valentino and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. It’s weird and kind of hippie-ish but I like how she looks! Just maybe not the best choice for the Globes. But the wide cut of the fabric at the shoulders and her gorgeous makeup and earrings made her look really pretty.
People seemed to like Felicity Jones‘ teal Dior Haute Couture. The color is very pretty but it’s just too old a style for this younger actress. But it fits her nicely. On Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep it would have been lovely.
I really don’t like this Mary Katrantzou gown on the beautiful Scandal star and presenter Kerry Washington. The two-tone is strange, and so is the tea length and belling out of the dress. If it was a long, sleek gown in the magenta, it would have been a lot more sophisticated and more chic.
A Worst Dressed of the Night look. The Imitation Game star Keira Knightley is normally a little slice of Chanel heaven on the red carpet but this look by her go-to label is just wrong in every which way.
The presenter had the funniest moment of the night alongside buddy Bill Hader, but the amazing Kristen Wiig once again went weird with this dress. Kristen Wiig’s low-waisted, off-the-shoulder gown was an actual wedding dress from Delphine Manivet Pagan Bride collection. Strange choice and pretty for the Independent Spirit Awards, just not the Globes. *Winter White
This is my vote for the other Worst Dressed of the Night. Ruth Wilson, star of the Globe-winning show The Affair, chose this bizarre column dress in a kelly green by Prada. It just doesn’t work at all for me. Blech.
Great job Lena Dunham! The Girls star and writer and all-around cool girl looked much improved in this bright red satin gown by Zac Posen and Irene Neuwirth jewelry. It was a bit wrinkled but still, she is doing better! Her hair and makeup looked chic and pretty also.
