This is awesome movie remake news! The very fine, very funny Channing Tatum will be starring in a remake of the classic Tom Hanks/Daryl Hannah 1984 film Splash. But – get this – Tatum is playing the mermaid (“mer-man?”)!
Workaholics comedienne Jillian Bell will be starring in the role that made a household name of Hanks, as a person who falls in love with the sea-dwelling creature who saved her from drowning as a child.
The new project from Disney is said to be in the very early stages of development. Imagine Entertainment’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer will produce along with a team from Free Association. Grazer teased in June that he might return to the fish-out-of-water romance that launched his career more than three decades ago, adding that the new movie would be “a version of” his original idea for Splash. Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture president Sean Bailey put the finishing touches on the Splash deal this past Friday night.
It won’t be the first time this acting odd couple have worked together. Tatum and Bell previously worked together on 22 Jump Street. He’ll next be seem in the action sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle, while she is featured in the upcoming Jennifer Aniston/Jason Bateman comedy Office Christmas Party.
